It goes without saying, but I feel the need to prefix this post with a clear message; we do not support violence, anti-government riots or extremism in any form.
We agree that all platforms need to conduct better censorship, however we don’t agree with how they are currently executing that responsibility. We would suggest they focus by promoting algorithms that limit what you can see, rather than limiting what you can say. That, I feel is more reflective of the real world we live in. I trust that our world is going in the right direction. Democracy has voted for progression and as our communities collaborate, educate & develop, I believe most radical extremism will fall by the wayside given enough time.
The internet’s major platforms are much more than just public companies, they are our digital reality. In our new reality, everyone must have a voice for better or worse. If we, the tech community don’t uphold this we are developing false online communities that don’t connect with our true world. In the past 60 years our mainstream society has seen the horrifying effects of free speech oppression from the far-right but seem to be very accepting of the same oppression from the far-left.
You may not support the current leader of the USA. However if you respect democracy, you will have considered that 75 million americans voted him into power. The recent bans on social media signal a dangerous threat to our democracy. We have witnessed the silencing of an elected politician by non-elected entrepreneurs. Taking away anyones voice, be it your neighbour or local shop keeper, should worry us all. The fact this voice belongs to the elected leader of the free world, exhibits the frightening power of tech.
Publishing an app on a primary distribution platform is no simple process, lines of code are vetted, policies combed-through & terms reviewed. If a chat room app launches with ‘uncensored free speech’ as a key feature, it must have been approved by the platforms itself. When that same lack of policing rears its head, we must hold all parties equally responsible. The users, the application and the platform are accountable, not just the application. During this weeks’ blame-game big tech has shown it’s true colours collectively, they will break any policy to appear the good guy and Trump may have gift-wrapped ultimate power for them. (They’ve had it all along but needed a reason to publicly claim the final dimension of power). Where do they go with it next? No matter what side of the fence you’re on… its definitely food for thought.
As a service, we know what we stand for & we are proud of that. We look forward to empowering the voices & brands of our customers. Navigating through Q1 2021 our company will continue to stand by our choices in protecting & promoting free speech in any way we can. If your platform is searching for a new home we’d be happy to have you, no matter what you stand for.
All the best,
